Cow Pot    -   19/1/69

Party:- Pete Llewellyn, Jim Newton, Chris Hadwin, Herbert HeadechSteve Potter.

The object of the trip was to enter Lancaster Hole and take a ladder along to Chris and Herbert's dig off Montague West. This had broken through to the top of a rift. As an alternative to the l00ft. pitch down Lancaster Hole Cow Pot was decided upon.

When we reached the dig everyone had a look at it in turn but when I had a look they said “Here is a ladder Pete.’ The rift turned out to be only as wide as the rungs of the ladder where the dig entered, and. I had to jam a spade across the top and hang the ladder over it so that I was able to descend down the widest part of the l5ft. deep rift. With Jim holding the end of the ladder there were no belay points ), with the spade threatening to slip, and with visions of Neil Moss I descended only to find that the rift was blocked at the end and that the passage at the other end would have frightened a fat rabbit. To the despair of all Pete haters the belay held and I was able to get out, to be rewarded by a welcome cigarette from Chris.

After a quick look at a few other Items of interest along Montague West we returned after an enjoyable five hours underground. For those who like pitches the Fall Pot pitch must rank as one of the finest in the country. Certainly in my opinion it is more sensational than the final pitch down Juniper Gulf.

Pete. D. W. Llewellyn.
