A returnable deposit of£1 will be charged
for the key, but there will be no charge for access.
The following is a copy of a letter sent
by Tom Sykes on behalf of the Council of Northern Caving Clubs, for publication
in "Descent" and the "Speleologist" :-
The Council has been disturbed for some time by irresponsible
people going on Leck and Casterton Fells, where access agreements exist, without seeking permission.
These people have brought us accusations of maladministration from the owners and have on several occasions almost brought to an end an amicable agreement
between cavers and landowners, which has existed since 1962. Do these people not realise that before this
the fells were closed completely. The agreement was made to open the fells to cavers. They only have to ask in order to be
given permission.
The latest effort of the “pirates” is
to remove our notice, (which tells
people hew to gain permission) to black it out and then to return it. Do they
think that this is funny? Will they and their cavers think it funny if the
landowners close the fells again because of their action?
The club caver who goes to the trouble of
asking permission should watch out for these people. They are threatening
access to some of the best caves in the country.
And to the “pirates’ - come out in the open and ask
for access. None has yet been refused.
