New Digs & Discoveries in Kingsdale

I965  has been quite a good year for us in Kingsdale, with four discoveries and many promising digs. An organised series of fluorescence tests have been started at Kingsdale Head obtaining many interesting results. A full report on the tests should be ready for the next journal. The year began with the completion of the Gaze Gill survey. This February almost a quarter of a mile passage being explored & surveyed. The first discovery was the connection of Gaze Gill stream passage with Lower Brown Hills Cave resulting in a through. trip from sink to resurgence. This was followed on the 17th. of July by two new pots on the high plain. No 1. N.G.R. SD684 770 is a narrow descending rift to a 10 foot pitch, terminating in a choked crawl. No.2. N.G.R. SD683 770 consists of a narrow fissure requiring a 15 foot ladder followed by a tight eyehole to 20 foot ladder. At the foot of the pitch, two fluted avens about 20 feet high end in chokes. A low crawl at floor level blows a slight draught.

On the 29th. of March the club discovered a new hole on Scales Moor. An account of this is given in Newsletter Vol 3. No. 2. Our longest and most interesting find was that of Kingsdale Head Cave, which was found on November 22nd. After digging a sizeable entrance we were able to explore the cave for about 250 feet to a sump. The cave starts as a low duck through a shallow pool and commences into a fair sized stream passage, containing many stals, rimstone pools and remains of curtains. The survey is now complete, showing the cave to head towards Batty Cave sump and Kingsdale House sink.
