Note from new Editor

Peter Devlin

As most of you will know, I have taken over from Samuel Carradice as editor of this newsletter. Many thanks to Samuel for all his efforts in this role over the past nine years. I am particularly grateful to Samuel for his painstakingly thorough handover of the newsletter. This came with a document explaining how it all works and to date Samuel has been remarkably patient with my seemingly endless stream of idiotic questions.

As an avid Descent reader I note with interest some of the achievements members of the Red Rose have made. While it is great to publish our exploits to the wider caving community I don’t feel it should be at the expense of our own newsletter. I hope that more of the active ongoing projects can be written up for the club newsletter.

I also hope we can hear more from new club members. Having been the editor of the OUCC newsletter for quite some time I particularly enjoy accounts of novice trips. These often remind me of how I felt on my early caving trips. Please take the time to capture some of those impressions for posterity.

To those that claim to be too busy to do a report, my response is that I’m busy too, so write a short one. Surely it need not take more than 15 or 20 minutes out of your day to write a few paragraphs.

To those that claim they have not been underground recently I am happy to include your defence for not going caving. If trekking around the Himalaya’s is your excuse sent me a non-caving report. If none of these apply but you are tired of my editorial rant, send me a report.
